As Bruce and Sean have been too modest or too busy to blog, most of you may know that they did a PB on the GC marathon! Knocked an amazing 14 or so minutes off their Canberra time & they were walking along the beach the next day looking great. (I know this cause I saw two guys in "I did 42 km " tshirts....and thought I know them).
So obviously Bruce has struck a winning formula - fluey, undertrained and busy at work!

W2G 2008
It was so wonderful to see everyone today at the Woodford to Glenbrook run, but sad that Denise was unable to make it, due to Friday nights incident. You were there in spirit with us Denise and we all hope you get better soon. Also, how wonderful to see Bruce cheering us on at the start and finish, it made it even more special.
But yeah, perfect conditions for a run in the bush with your buddies. It was more rugged than I'd expected and I had to walk up so many of the hills in the first section, which was a shame. Saw plenty of turned ankles and cuts too, which goes to show that it's certainly no walk in the park the W2G, so well done everyone on finishing.
Oh, and a massive thank you for everyone who looked after me, when I had my 'little moment' at the end. I can't remember who helped me, but thank you. That can of coke certainly hit the spot too Leonor, thank you. But yeah, nothing to worry about, it's just typical Lee being a drama queen as per normal.
Hope everyone's legs come right over the next week an good luck to those of you running next weekend on The Gold Coast.
Lee :o)

Woodford
Just wanted to check if anyone wants to share cars/ logistics for Woodford (ps I know a great lunch spot...)
Margaret and I did Mosman Reversed last Friday - what a great run - lots of stairs, ocean views and coffee places (you will be so proud of us as we didn't stop for coffee or a swim).
I am doing the Melbourne Half this Sunday so have a great run

Running never felt so good (not!)
I had a great run yesterday - 23 kms along the Harbour - no map reading needed as this area is Margaret's backyard but when I got home I wanted to go to sleep.
It felt like 35kms or I am just getting older ? Please tell me you felt the same and I will know it's not just me!
I am away the next 2 weekends - so see you in Woodford...

North Ryde Ramble
Thanks to:
Paula and Margaret - cooking, cooking, cooking, cutting, cutting cutting and cleaning
Leonor - lifting, cleaning, organising, starting at 5.30, for the stars & cloths !
Sharyn - returning to run for the marking of the course; bringing all the essentials
Ghost Rider - muscles and maps
Ted and Lee - moral support and early morning help
Phil - for bringing a great MTG (given the younger age profile of this group I was glad I joined in Canberra 08!)
Sean - for good humour as always
Kate, Alec, Nicola, Sean and Jarvis - Striders 2020...
Special thanks to Paula, Sharyn & Leonor for practicing getting lost so that the course was marked correctly!
Who else would be such an easy group to organise but a bunch of mums who run marathons and Ghost Rider.

Reason to do the Gold Coast Marathon in 2008 or 2009
For the first time at the Gold Coast Airport Marathon, participants in the full 42.2km marathon have the opportunity to have a name or nickname included on their race number (in addition to the number).
Aside from first names or nicknames like Smithy, a taste of some of the nicknames so far are:
PlodBod, Ironhorse, Pacman, Turbo, Whippet, Crash, Rhino, Hairy, If its to be, Sharkbait, Just2finish, lucky phil, Barefoot, sailaway, Team Penguin, Smiles, Cut Loose, Toots, Bam Bam, Bones, 67 Hotcat, GallopingKev, dugong and Marathon Man.
Now given that Marathon Man/ Men and Toots is taken, I am sure that Bruce, Sean and Phil would love some suggestions..
As I am only doing the Gold Coast Half, I guess I only get half a name..

As I can't do Sydney Marathon this year, I am going to do Melbourne in October. To get some practice on the Melbourne course (need to assure myself that I can find the loos!), I am going to do the Melbourne Half on June 22.
Just thought I would mention this in case any of you have a) relatives you have been meaning to visit in Melbourne for ages b) relatives you want to escape in Sydney c) frequent flyers that expire on June 23!

My Pen
I had a pen which is quite cherished and some time between Friday and Monday morning I have lost it. It is a Caran d'Ache, black with a silver tip and end and I wondered if somehow I left it or used it at the dinner. If anyone saw it or rememebers me waving it around I'd be very grateful. Tedious I know but I'd like it back.
It was a very enjoyable dinner. Had a lot of fun but rowing at 6.30 the next morning was not a highpoint.
My MTB injury is still hurting even at 5.5kms so I am taking it easy. I don't like my Gold Coast chance but let's see.

Where was the Kenyan?
Hi all
That was some run yesterday! Just as I'd spent the week basking in the afterglow of a half marathon that felt pretty relaxed, along came Cherrybrook to wipe away my complacency! I don't know if it was the cold or the bush hills or probably a combination of both but I was sore and exhausted after that one. Where was the Kenyan in me when I needed it most?
I realise that before I start dreaming of high fiving smiling kids as I run through villages on my way to completing the Comrades Marathon, I have a very long way to go.
I also realised, standing near Helen Wilson, that I would need to loose about 10 kilos of useless bulk to be at a good weight for ultra running.
Anyway, enough self pity. I have cakes to cook for our STaR!
Have a great week

Cherrybrook Circut
In case you didn't see the email, tomorrow's run starts at Edward Bennett Oval rather than the starting point on the map.
See you at 6 am!
ps I chatted to Helen Wilson (the strider who completed 11 Comrades) last night. What an inspiration...she is hosting tomorrow's run if you have any questions (like how did you do that and survive).

North Ryde Ramble again...
You may get tired of my posts by the 31st May BUT I would like to do MTG proud!
Please run your eye over your list and let me know if you need a hand with anything.
Let's mark out the course on Sat 31st May meeting at 2 pm or 3pm at the starting point (Waterloo Park). As we will need to mark most of it, we may need to split into 2 groups or have a really long slow run..
Any thoughts on how to mark it (chalk & flour seem popular but weather dependent.)
Also need to check out the park & the toilets (the kids and I may make our way over there this weekend..)

And another one?
Hi all,
I was browsing the list of NSW Half-Marathons last night and I came across the Lake Macquarie Half on August 31. I like the idea of doing one in the country. A flat and fast course around the lake, and a small field, sounds like it could be OK! Maybe PB territory or just a pleasant run.
It could fit in with the Marathon training schedule with a bit of shuffling around. I might give it a go, and take the family up there for the weekend if they want to come.
So if anyone is interested the more the merrier...
And Ted, thanks so much for the support yesterday, during and after the run. You spoilt us!
Have a good week, and see you at the dinner

North Ryde Ramble..
Just a reminder that it is 2 weeks away until we host the North Ryde Ramble.
Let me know if you are not sure what you need to be doing & I can re email you the list..
I heard a good rumour about home made cakes so you may be asked to contribute to the cooking by Paula and Margaret.
On Saturday May 31 sometime later in the day I will be riding the route (although happy to run) to mark it out and would really really appreciate some company (even for part of the time)...without saying the very obvious, we will be hosting rather than doing much on the Sunday so this is a chance to do your long run that weekend!

Whose great idea was the meeting place?
Well it was Margaret's good idea...I improved (?) it and Paula would have thought of it if she had the time between sick kids and birthday parties!
Just confirming that we are meeting at 7 am near Museum Train Station corner of Elizabeth & Liverpool Streets (inside the station entry if it is raining..)
Ted has kindly offer to hold car keys, jumpers etc (What a guy).
I imagine that with the exception of Ted most of us won't have our mobiles so if we don't see you there, see you at the finish!

Good Luck HM'ers
All my best wishes to those running on Sunday. I can sense the excitment in your emails. Wish I was able to run too :(
I was allowed to start running today - "a small distance", said the physio. "What...you mean 5kms or so?", says the optimistic repressed runner. "HA HA" he says (not smiling), "1km with a mixture of walking and running" AAAGH.
So enjoy it for me.....
I will see you at the dinner. (Margaret I will pay you there if that's ok).
PS -this is top secret but if anyone wants a female entry for "you know what", contact me. A bit late notice but you never know.

SMH Half Meeting Spot
Paula's suggestion of meeting at 7am at Museum Station (corner Liverpool & Elizabeth Streets) is a great one.
Ted - it's great you can come & be one of our suppporters - thanks!
For those with a bit of time afterwards, breakfast could be nice...(last year I remember very green hard apples were provided at the end of the half..not our usual Striders fare).
Isn't it nice we can do a half and think of it as a little run!

Week one of the program is out of the way. I've issued a new version of the program this week to fix up some basic problems with the spreadsheet. Finally got that task out of the way!
Enjoy your running and please feel free to send me any questions you may have. Or post them here!

Awards Dinner Update
Hi all,
I received a Striders email Saying they have a few spots left for the dinner, so I thought I should confirm with you who is on the MTG Table I have booked, so if anyone else wants to come along, or bring somone, there's still time to do so.
I have counted in Bruce, Denise, Lee, Leonor, Paula and Tank Engine, Peter, Sharyn, Ted and myself.
Those of us doing the Half on Sunday should try and meet before the start so we can take off together. Denise and i ran the course on Saturday afternoon and I'm happy to say the hills, up from Lady Macquarie's Chair, Hunter St and the Argyle Cut seemed so much less daunting than this time last year. It should be a good run!
Enjoy the week
Margaret

I don't jog anymore..
I have had 10 days straight of work but have enjoyed a run or the gym most days. And have really been heartened by the texts/ emails going round.
As I was running this week I thought that I really really like this and, I am no longer a jogger but a runner...
now there's another song " I'm a lover not a fighter, I'm a runner not a jogger"
now I had better go and do some more sprints so that I can actually run!

enthusiasm
It's great to be watching so much post Canberra vigour from you all. It took me a full fortnight to really get over it but I too have caught the bug and after 2 short runs (approx. 8 kms) I was starting to think in terms of surfers and/ or melbourne as I felt that there was "room for improvement".
Unfortunately for me, in my enthusiasm for the goal I lost sight of commonsense and wound up getting knocked over by a taxi in Mannheim. I am OK except for a fractured fibula but that puts an end to surfers at least. I can't believe I was so stupid but it's too late to cry over spilt milk. I guess its time to do a bit of helping out with striders runs for the next few weeks.
So I would urge you all to think of safety first and injury free running . Don't forget to listen to your body and to be kind to yourself.
Regards from soccer heaven

Past victories were great,
Sean and I did our first sprint training session last night, in the hopes of improving our times for the 10k, 1/2's and Gold Coast. Well not sprints exactly but running almost as fast as I could.
Its the first time I've done that in, oh, 20 years. And I thought running distance could hurt.

Fabulous Phil
After review of many of the marathon pics (offical and those taken by my husband Tom) I have come to the conclusion that Phil is the smiling assassin. He claims he was hurting but not once does he appear in pain. A perfect smile is always in place.
Phil - were you a model/air hostess in a former life???
We did what????
I know I am slow (mentally AND in running speed) but I still can not believe that I am a Marathoner!
I reckon I've harboured a Marathon dream for at least 15 years. But that stuff is for real runners not people like me whose bodies were built (I think) for water bouyancy and have messy unpredictable lives and left legs with DVTs. Yet somehow there is a marathon finisher's medal hanging around my bed post........
It's only now looking back at the pictures that I am starting to appreicate just how bl**dy determined we all were. Look at the four faces below - we mean business!
I am so looking forward to our run on Sunday. I feel really good today - wandering through Canberra's museums on Monday really helped (although was a bit tough towards the end on Monday!). See you all Sunday!

CELEBRATE
I JUST WANT TO CELEBRATE ANOTHER DAY OF LIVING
These are the the opening words of a rock 'n' roll song that used to be a favorite of mine in my younger unruly days;
I want to thank you all for the true camaraderie that you shared with me in the lead up to last sunday ; it was a privilege to be part of the group and I am personally proud of your achievements.
I hope that you all will long remember it as a milestone along life's tortuous track.
I look forward to reliving it with you sometime in the not to distant future

2 more sleeps (and my last post pre-race)
Team, it's good to see evidence of correct preparation - bags packed and muffins consumed. Going slightly "pink" phobic as I try not to let my work colleagues see my screen while I surf the pink blog all day!
Nice pic Paula - your husband probably thinks that taper madness has well and truly set in.
Here's the last To-Do list and I'll see you all tomorrow at 2pm at Manuka!
* Sleep well tonight. And don't worry if you don't sleep well tomorrow night. No-one will. Waste of a good hotel room really.
* Forecast is 9deg low and 19deg high with shower or two (late showers Saturday), so:
- bring the garbage bag in case of rain Sunday morning
- don't get your shoes too wet on Saturday if you decide to run in the rain
* Keep carb-loading (yes, I know you feel stuffed. I've put on a kilo already!)
I know that we haven't trained much in the rain over summer as a group, but I'm sure you all ran in rain during January and that bad weather patch. But don't worry too much - your shoes will only become waterlogged if it is REALLY raining hard, or you are running through puddles. Otherwise you shoes should be fine and you don't need to do anything different. It will only make us all a little more crazy anyway...
Only two more sleeps. I KNOW you guys are ready for this!!

I Never met a carbohydrate I didn't like
Hey fab folk
Tom (my husband who is working from home today at the desk opposite mine) just INSISTED that I post the above picture that he just snapped.
I've been out for a couple hours with the kids - who are driving me NUTS. Upon my return I came almost immediately to my PC to check this blog. While reading the latest updates I started chowing down on one of the muffins Tom bought me this morning. Thus the image you now see. Tom felt this was too priceless an image to not share - carbs and the blog all that matters at the moment.
I think an intevention could be in order very soon.... Mam, just step away from the PC
It IS like being nine months pregnant and it's now time to just run the bl&&dy thing!
the excitement is building
The weather is looking kind. We should all hope (pray) that it continues this way. My first M was London which I believe is also on on sunday where I see it's snowing at the moment. It was mild and overcast at the start which belied what was to come. Because there are so many entrants you start in 3 different chutes and join up about 6 kms in. The group I was in , being firsttimers, was at the back and we were squashed together in "pens". Once the gun went off, we moved slowly forward still at close quarters. It took 6 minutes to cross the starting line ! At about the 18k mark it started to rain and thunder------then it briefly hailed . For the rest of the journey it mostly drizzled with intermittent bursts of rain all the way to the finish. I've got to say that I can't remember being so cold. Once we crossed the finish line they gave us a drink and a sandwich and one of those "space " blankets (a square piece of tinfoil like sheet) but searching for the support team was agony.
I ended up walking back to our digs ( I don't think it was very far from the finish) and got straight into a hot bath. I had this huge grin on my face from ear to ear. I don't think I would have been so happy if it hadn't been my first marathon.
So kind weather would be good.
A couple more tips . I find thin socks are good because if it gets warm my feet tend to heat up and so do my runners, causing foot deterioration e.g. blisters, loss of toenails, internal bleeding etc. Another thing that happens to me is that my core (innards) temperature drops towards the end of the journey and once I stop I can get uncontrollable shaking that looks like I'm having a heart attack or something. This is quite easily fixed by having a warm drink at the end instead of a cold one ( which would compound the problem I would think).
I'm starting to feel very excited and I wish you all a fabulous journey and a runners "high" at the end.

Is There Anything Missing?
I've taken Phil's advice and packed my running bag tonight (Thursday) allowing me the chance to pick up anything I've forgotten tomorrow. So here's a list and a picture, please let me know if I've missed anything :o)

1. Fuel belt (still undecided on my fluid strategy, as I don't like stopping).
2. Two hats.
3. Navman, inhaler and preventer.
4. After race towel.
5. Sydney Strider running vest.
6. Two pairs of running socks.
7. Two sweat bands.
8. Box of jelly beans/snakes.
9. Sunglasses.
10. 2XU running compression shorts for race.
11. Post run Crusaders shirt (There's an All-Blacks one under it, in case I choke and don't finish)
12. Old t-shirt to wear to start line, then discard.
13. Old socks to keep hands warm at start then discard.
14. Split time wristband. 03:55:00 (fingers crossed)
15. New Zealand passport for ACT/NSW border crossing.
16. 3 x GU.
17. Round plasters for nipple protection.
18. Deep Heat for pre-race Achilles (great tip from Phil)
19. Bepanthan for any chaffing.
20. 2XU long compression tights for drive home.
21. Tommy Cooper book, as I won't be sleeping much on Saturday night.
22. Old runners for to-and-from Canberra.
23. Current runners for race.
24. Endura for yet to be decided race fluid strategy.
25. Shorts to wear over tights when we stop for food, on way home in small town OZ ;o)
Is there anything I've forgotten? It's just Felix and I tomorrow, so I can do a last minute shop.
Thanks in advance, Lee 708

3 more sleeps
Today's to-dos:
* Start your carb-loading if you haven't already
* Stop exercising (except for one run of 2-3kms on Saturday)
* Start your mental preparation (start to visualise the race and break it down into components - especially if you are going to be running your own race and may not have support of a group to run with)
* Plan your weekend - leave plenty of time for everything. Make it a stress-free weekend (yes, even those with kids)
* Clear a space on the wall for your medal (positive thoughts)
* Pack your bags tonight
Hope the nerves are treating you well - I ran my 7kms last night and it fel like everything was hurting - funny how the mind plays tricks on you.

Canberra Marathon Course
Hi Fab Five and Friends
I need your valuable advice.
My family is keen to come and support us on Sunday and call 'GO STRIDER'. They were just wondering which would be the best location to encourage us all.
I can only guess as from 30 - 35 onwards ??? I just printed the course for them.
Any help from experienced marathon runners and future marathon champs would be most welcome.
I'm so excited - I feel like telling the world, I will be running my first marathon on Sunday, I will be running my first marathon on Sunday ... :)
Talk soon

Today's to-dos:
* print off 3 copies of the carb-loading document and label "Thursday" thru "Friday"
* go shopping to ensure you have everything you need to eat (I've done my shopping today already)
* print off your pacing wristband from the Striders website
* Use your pacing wristband to pace yourself on your 8km run today. Pretend it's Sunday morning and you have another 34kms to go at the end.
* Use nervous energy productively (e.g. Sharyn and housecleaning)
* Ignore any aches and pains (your mind is playing tricks)
* Read last 3 editions of MTG weekly update (shameless plug here)
* Enjoy good luck messages coming in from other Striders
Hey, even I'm starting to get a few butterflies today!
I'm thinking of you all.

I'm still standing..
Yes... we're on to Elton John songs now - all ready for those last 7kms.
The gastro has struck down two boys and Daddy. Tom has actually been stuck in a hotel room in Melbourne. Too sick with gastro to leave the room - so can't go to work and can't get home here.
So.... it's only me and the baby (James) holding firm re this bug. And James is snotty and coughy.
Is it because they're mere males, is it because viruses don't even like me??
Haning tough,
Paula
PS Don't worry I'm not attaching photos of sick kids

THIS IS EB ON DEBOO(T)
I can't believe the time of day most of you are on the keyboard. I'm soooooo glad I've left the anklebiters behind a long while ago !!!
The end of daylight saving has been momentous. Daylight saving is dead . Long live daylight saving. At least one knee I know of agrees with me. But seriously I feel like I've got an extra hour to spend every day .
ATTENTION TO DETAIL --------------------FOR SUNDAY
Make sure you've cut and trimmed your toenails. Don't pull off any loose ones. It will be tender under there. Let them come off there of their own free will. If you've got other foot or toe problems see a podiatrist straight away and tell them what you're doing. They will tape up those bits that need it and leave the stuff you'll need to protect your feet. By all means use some runners foot cream but I don't recommend it on the day (until after the run).
Don't put your socks on inside out ! (easy to do if you do it in the dark) . If you do your feet won't thank you at the end of 42.
Don't forget to put your timing chip well down your laces and check that your laces are well and truly done up properly. Nothing is worse than having to stop and do them up once you're in THE ZONE.
Take it quietly going up or down stairs on race morning!
Put bandaids on your nipples ( not sure whether the girls need to do this ) but blood all over your singlet as you cross the line for a PB is not a good look!
Don't forget the VASELINE if you have a habit of chafing--42km is a long way to run if you're uncomfortable. It's good for lips too.
YOU GUESSED IT------------------- I'VE LEARNT ALL THIS FROM EXPERIENCE.
"education is what you get from reading the fine print ---- experience is what you get when you don't " Just ask the the clients of OPES PRIME.

Can I finally mention the weather?
The latest Marathon email from Canberra has said that the forecast for Sunday is sunny and 21 degrees. I checked online and it says 22 with a chance of a late shower. Bit too early to know for sure, but the lows are forecast at 7 deg, which means we need to rug up in the morning.
Fingers crossed, but I don't think a bit of rain is going to stop us now!

HELP HELP HELP
No. 1 Son has been vomiting tonight!!!!
Trying so hard to be comforting but really wanting to just ward him off with a huge rope of garlic in one hand and the vitamin-c bottle in the other. But let's be honest - if it's gastro neither will help. :-(
Hints and suggestions please?????????
Phil - the following of your quotes is without doubt the best of all the programme.
We are different, in essence, from other men. If you want to win something, run 100 meters. If you want to experience something, run a marathon."-Emil Zatopek
I shall quote verbatim to all those folk who ask "why run a marathon?"
Sharyn - gosh I laughed out loud at the vision of you in a mad house-cleaning frenzy!!
You've certainly all made me feel better today and I'm ever so pleased we're all as nutty as each other.
Lee - Where are you?
Bruce - and how about you? Put that brief down for a minute and ssssstttttrettttccccchhhh
I'm sure we'll chat again on this blog soon. - obviously this is where all our running energy is being redirected!

Into the unknown!
Hi everyone,
I really enjoyed this morning's shorter run. Despite the reduced ks, the hills provided enough of a challenge at this late stage in the programme for it to feel like a workout.
Next time we all get together, it will be for 42k, I'm trying to think of it in the same way as I did the jump from 25 to 30k, or from 30 to 35k. It should work out, and I think we are all ready to give this next jump into the unknown our best shot.
It's been wonderful to run with some more experienced runners over the last few weeks, people like Pauline, Ted and lots of others who have been so generous with their encouragement and shown so much confidence in us as novices to the Marathon. I'm sure that we'll all benefit from having them around in Canberra, at least at the start!
Lee, let us know how you're traveling...pretty good if your 10k time is any indication!
Enjoy the rest of the taper. See you all in Canberra,
Margaret

I am up - when's the run?
After having woken up every Saturday night/ Sunday mornings every couple of hours to check the alarm, last week and this week I slept through til just before the alarm. So now that I have finally gotten used to getting up at 4.30 I don't need too.
So this is why striders just keep coming back - what else can you do this early on a Sunday morning? (I went to church last night!).
See you soon

Kids Marathon
They have been in hard training for years.....running away from mummy when it's time to put shoes on; escaping at shopping centres; running to hide in far corners of playgrounds; running and screaming (Bruce!) when it's time to wash hair.
That's how I got fit...chasing after them.
DAYLIGHT SAVINGS
Hey Guys,
We all get a well deserved extra hour sleep tonight. If you are like me you have probably been looking forward to this all week. Anyway it will be nice to start the run on Sunday in daylight!
Our 7am start will feel like morning tea time.

The Shoes Have Landed!
Yes the SMC came good on their prize of free shoes. A pair of shiny new Nike shoes were delivered to my house this afternoon! I shall be sure to wear them to our pre-race pep talk on the Saturday afternoon. You can all admire them and know that each of your $12 entry fees paid for a teeny tiny bit of them.
No. 2 Son (Declan) tried them on first. Very funny - he had that clown feet look going on. He then began to run up and down the hall in them - an extremely funny kodak moment that I'm inflicting upon you all (see left).
The truly alarming thing was the "panting" sound he affected while doing these runs........ Do I really sound like that???!!!
Oh! My excitement levels are on high. I have to consciously hold myself back from making comments to all and sundry about the fact I'm running a marathon in just 10 days. AAAAAAAAAAAGGGHHH Have just worked out that we're down to single digits tomorow!!
I've only got to enter three more runs in that spreadsheet. And all things going to current plans - I will only run the treadmill one more time before the big M. :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-)

Vaucluse Variation STaR
Even though I pack my bag, mix my drinks and lay all my kit out the night before we run, I still get distracted when I get up by playing for too long on the computer. I did it again this week for our Vaucluse run and left my camera on the kitchen work top, as I just knew there'd be some wonderful views on our run. Bugger!
However, it was still a pleasure, as ever, to run with my fellow MTG buddies and chat, not just about running, but a whole plethora of subjects. I've not just learned about hydration from Phil this week, but also about Terry Fox from Bruce, that Margaret, like me, is a fan of Feist and that the term 'Pulling Up' means how you finished your run from Pauline. I'd heard the term before, but thought it meant pulling up with an injury.
I've also uploaded a map of the run, which shows the elevation going from 1 to 91 metres, which would account for my sore butt right now. Well, thats not totally true, as at one stage I made the mistake of not concentrating and getting in with the wrong crowd, as it were. For some unknown reason, I managed to find myself running with the 6.10am runners - NEVER AGAIN. Boy do the fly. But I had no choice, as I was lost if I didn't follow them. It was such a relief to be running along the sea front and spot you guys again.
And finally, it was so nice to get to run for a while with Leonor, who looks so good now, wouldn't you agree.

Vaucluse Vegan Variation
There has been a blogging taper too, I see.
I've done 2 x 10 and 1 x8k at a slow pace this week, with only a little pain, so I'm going to try the 25k tomorrow. That may end up being a long walk rather than a run on the theory that there is only 1 long run (1 run?) that counts from here on in, but as I e-mailed Fran I'm particularly keen to come because whilst I've heard all about "Men are from Mars, Women are from Vegan" I've never read it.
Looking forward to seeing everyone. B.

Awards Dinner
Has anyone given any thought to attending the Striders Award Dinner on Friday May 23rd? I would like to go, especially to hear the guest speaker, Bruce Fordyce, an ultra-marathoner, discussing his experiences. Maybe the Fab 5 and friends could get a table together.
Hope everyone is enjoying the Easter break

Was It Really That Far!
It was great to run again with all you guys at Wahroonga. I just plotted the route on Map My Runs and glad that I did post and not pre-run, as it's a bloody long way eh! Enjoyed it though, as it was heaps cooler and the comapny was, as ever, wonderful.
As a late comer to the group, I thought I'd upload a couple of pictures of the family, who are Adrienne, Jarvis and Felix, and are all busting to meet you at The Canberra Marathon. The pictures of Jarvis are from a couple of weeks ago, when he wanted to be a runner like his Mumma and Dah. He's wearing a combination of Adrienne and mines running gear. I think we might have a junior Strider in the making here.

A very fine feeling
Hi team
I'm sure you all agree that it's a very fine feeling indeed to have the last long run under our belts! Thanks Sharyn and Leonor for all the goodies at the end, it was very welcome. The run itself was really pleasant.
I've been busy relaxing with my feet up and a couple of non-stick dressings glued firmly to the grazes on my knees. I should have listened to Ted, the voice of experience, who was saying to me before my spill that at this point in the programme, take it easy cause you wouldn't want to get hurt now, this is just when it can happen. I have learn't my lesson! Never run forwards while looking backwards! Luckily for me my knees feel fine, except for the outside. Reminds me of 5th class.
Lee, your laid-back week seems to have done you no harm at all, you cruised through today.
Does anyone know if Amy turned up? I have a feeling she was probably tucked away in some cosy place with a warm drink. I hope she and Chris found eachother without any dramas.
Have a good week everyone, I'm going to miss these group runs after April 13. See you in Vauclause

GOOD FRIDAY RUN
Hi Guys,
Hope to see you all at 5.30am for our final 35km run before the "big one".
Start/finish: Wahroonga Park, Cnr Millewa and Illoura Ave, Wahroonga
If everyone can bring their usual $3, I will get post race food. Bring own gels though (Pete, I still owe you).
At least 6 people from the Putney run are coming too... Fran, Pauline, Karen etc.
I had a big fall running through the bush at 6am in the dark this morning. Split my knee - 5 stiches. Still finished the run. yay. Thanks to Fran for the TLC. Didn't hurt half as much as my legs by the end :)
Good running 'til Friday

I love Smithfield!! Yes I Paula McCormack DID write that!
I just got a SMS telling me that I won a pair of Nike shoes in their lucky draw thing. Apparently I have to call and give my addresss - and, I hope, my shoe size. Otherwise I will withdraw my love for the SMC if I get a pair of Men's size 14 Nikes!
I'll let you know how I go.
Thanks again to Bruce for dragging me through the last 7/8kms of the run today. The highlight was definitely the (approx) 20km mark and your sharing your ipod and "too sexy" being on. A truly FABULOUS moment in sport.
To be 45 seconds over the 4.30 pace time is something I really am happy with. I have run 75.5kms since Tuesday. AND if we add last Sunday in - a whopping 110.5kms in eight days.
Phil - how much of a factor is the high weekly mileage in our ability to maintain pace in the later part of these runs?
Had a really nice afternoon playing ladies at a high tea with girlfriends. At the end of it they were all ready to lay on the floor completely STUFFED with food. I was probably just content! Got to love the re-fuelling needed after 30kms!! If only social norms could have allowed me to jamm the food down my gob as quick as I really wanted to. Must also confess that the one glass of Champagne with said afternoon-tea did leave me feelling very very silly for a while!
I will now do a new post re Good Friday.

Smithfield Smashed (Sort of!)
We had a great run today. Inspired by Paula's nakedness, we ran in front of her (it seemed more polite) and she did have a great following behind her too!
Margaret, Paula Bruce and I ran very nicely to a 4 30 pacing...and even had enough breath to thank the SES volunteers on the way home.
Looking forward to Friday's run - hope those who did the River Run had fun & those who ran by themselves enjoyed their own company..

TO BElt OR NOT TO BElt
Boom tissssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...........
OK OK bad I know but where else could I go after which side of the chicken has more feathers????
Anyway - Big bold statement at this late stage re Smithfield. I'm going NUDE! YUP no belt.
Shocking I know, but I figure the aim is to replicate the race so I'm going to try it. Besides the legs feel so tired tonight that it's good to have another excuse up my sleeve if it all goes wrong again tomorrow. Gosh - there goes that bad attitude again!
Off to print out the rego form.
Paula
PS to create a new post - when you're at the view blog screen (with a bootiful pic) look up in the top right corner there's a "new post" option. Select and follow your nose!

A New Post FINALLY
Sorry guys but 17 posts was just way too many to scroll through - saving my energy for the kms on the road. And I need every bit of it as this will be ONLY week that I go over 70kms. Sssssshhhhhhhhhhhh don't tell Phil I've missed the odd run here and there - 'cause I know I must be the only one :-)
Firstly, Leonor - Excellent news!! Enjoy the sheer joy that I am sure must come after eight days of no running. Good luck!
Smithfielders - looking forward to the singfest! Off now to find shoulder pads to go with the 80's music I've been assigned!
Oh!!! No-one has come forth re the "strange" water bottle. What does that mean???

Thank you all for your kind words
Thank you so so much for all your support and kind words Everyone. You're all so lovely.
I thought about all of you today and I was so happy to see the beautiful weather you had, am sure that helped to keep you going. I'm really keen to know on how you went. Please let know how was is to run 35ks? Much different to run 30ks?
I'd love to read about your experience ...
Saw the new movie RUN FAT BOY RUN on Friday - I loved it - what a great comedy (must try to keep my spirits up).
Have a great week everyone and thanks again for your so kind words.

MTG - Sydney Marathon 35K Run
For many of us, this mornings MTG run that followed in part, some of the Sydney Marathon course was a milestone, as it was the first time that we'd ever run 35ks. Also, for the MTG runners who'd been there from the start, it also turned the clock over on a total of 1000ks of training runs to get to this point. That's an incredible feat in itself.
We kicked off the run in North Sydney at 5.30am, crossed the Harbor Bridge and began an incredible journey through the CBD, out to Randwick and back to our starting position at The North Sydney Oval. It sounds simple, but we had to endure aches, pains, the rising temperature on the return leg and countless drunks running alongside us.
Everybody ran strong and made it back to the start, where Phil had laid on a wonderful post run feast, which included jelly snakes, watermelon, bananas and ice-cold drinks.
So thank you to all the MTG runners for helping me complete my first ever 35K run, and Phil for plotting the route and organizing the run. I learned many lessons today, which included not only dietary and pacing advice, but also that esprit de corps counts for so much and that when fellow runners are away or injured, the group as a whole certainly misses them. But we all know that they be back fitting fit and alongside us come race day.

A little 'sad' Fab Five ...
Hi All
Need to share my sorrows. I'm injured and so upset (yes I had a cry - even in the office). Went to see my physio this morning and she's taken me off the road for 8 days ... My dear Fab Five and Friends, I just had to share this with you. My tears were just running down my cheeks (of course after I left the physio).
I have not been crying in months like today ... My biggest dream was to qualify for the Boston Marathon next year and then this news today - I was shattered. Well at the moment I'm just hoping that my Sacral Illiac Joint injury heals well and I'll be able to join you all very soon. Please run for me on Sunday and say a little prayer for me.
Take care

What An Honor
Thank you so much for inviting me to blog with your guys. Adrienne, my partner, will be stoked that I have yet another running thing to obsess about on the Internet :o) Only joking, as Adrienne, like all our partners I'm sure, is fully behind what we do and without their support, it would be heaps harder.
So yeah, thank you once again for inviting me to blog with you guys, I'll be in here often, as I blog pretty much everyday for my son Jarvis Tahi, who'll be coming down to Canberra, along with Adrienne and Felix Rua.
See you all next Sunday,
Lee :o)

The Fab Five find more Friends
Hey Fab Folk!
In the interests of being more inclusive of our male Striders I have just sent invitations to Peter Overton and Lee Baker (I think Baker is Lee's surname. Anyway "he" of the bandaid and body glide infamy) to join our little blog.
Let's hope that Mr Rudd and his Government follow our lead and become more cognizant of women in development of leadership forums and policy etc!!!
Ok ok.... enough of me on my politics soap box. I'm getting off and will now go watch Tely while massaging the inner-quad with a rolling pin. At long last I've found a use for it!
C u all for the BIG 35km next week.

Fab Five ... where are you!
I went to the North Head 10k today. I looked and looked, but no Fab Five. Peter was there, but no Fab Five. Ted was there, but no Fab Five. Pauline was there, but no Fab Five. I was going to shine the special Fab Five Bat light "F5F" on the clouds, but there was only blue sky. It was a beautiful morning. I loved the start. Being in that 200+ pack with my racing bib on behind elite runners (for a few seconds) before they moved away as I eased myself into the run.
I hope that everyone is OK and that I'll see you all tomorrow for the Balmain Basket so we can weave our way through the Streets of Balmain.

one week in time
Hi Fab Five
I cannot believe that being off line for one week, I would miss so much! OK over the past week I have helped select and register 20 soccer teams - which is my excuse and I am sticking to it. I am so sorry for not being part of what has been a crux week for many of us.
Firstly to Leonor - We truly are the lucky country having you join us. What an inspiring friend and runner you are! p.s. a great runner too!
Paula - You are the heart and soul of the Fab 5. Don't you dare give up girl! I'm only saying that because I know you won't. I must admit after Smithfield I went home and told my husband, I just didn't think I could make 42 km. He laughed, gave me a hug and said "of course you can". We all can! This is a lifetime ambition for me and it is only knowing that all the Fab 5 (plus honoury members i.e. males are going through the same challenge that gets me up for the next morning run.
Denise - Our spiritual leader who has been there before. We all value your little pearls of wisdom and enduring positive attitude.
Margaret - You will cross that finish line with a smile and say "I told you I'd make it no matter what". Your determination and desire to "do it" helps me keep going too.
Honoury Males - Bruce, Pete and John - I have included Pete & John (i am sure there are many more), who have been running with Leonor and I. Thanks for keeping us girls honest and all the encouragement.
And of course our esteemed leader Phil - A great run in the Equaliser. Well Done! Phil has showed us all that we can overcome injury and minor/major setbacks. Thanks for all the support, education and inspiration.
Looking forward to running together next w/end
Sharyn

Here's a snap from our beautiful city run. That's the QE2 in the background!
Pictured are, L to R, Bruce, Margaret, Denise, Sean (Bruce's PT who was our VIP guest for the run) and Ted B. Paula is at the front
Bruce - I really enjoyed the run today. Thanks for the hosting skills. As the mother of young children I should have taken that map of loos for future reference. I'll certainly bookmark that website!
Sean - if you're reading this, thanks for the stretching tips. I did a couple more here at home - OUCH!
Have a nice week, and c u all for the Balmain Bungle on the 2nd.

Big Ships
Hey guys
Didn't we pick a good day to run in the city!?? Two big ships to gawk at + the morning-after spectacle from a mardi-gras party at Mrs Macquarie's Point! I will definitely bring the camera so we can get a snap with one of them in the background.
I've been to the RTA website and it shows that Hickson Road is NOT a clearway. So let's hope we're okay to park. If there are loads of ship-spotters out and about at 6am on a Sunday we may, at worst, have to start further down Hickson towards the actual start of the SMH race. I shall have put all your mobile phone numbers in my mobile and we can play "duelling mobiles" until we find each other somewhere along Hickson Road.
I'll text you all now to ensure you log onto this blog before tomorrow.
Bruce - I don't have your number so I'll just email you and hope you get it. If you don't, then at least I have on record that I did try :-) - always covering my &ss!
Given that I don't have your number and this is a public forum can you please email me back with your number?
We can't be too careful - I am sure that there are 1000's of folk have bookmarked this blog and wait with bated breath for the next instalment. ;-)
Oh! I ran into (literally!) Ted Brailey (fellow Strider) on my 10km jaunt around Iron Cove this morning. We ran together for about 2.5 kms. He isn't doing the Equaliser tomorrow either and so was ver keen to hear of our rebel group. So I've emailed him with the tomorrow's details.
You'll all know Ted when you see him - he's one of those long time members who I think are like "national treasure" status within the club.

THANKS GUYS!
Wow! You all really are FABULOUS. Thanks for all your wonderful encouragement.
Life has been so completely mad since I posted that entry that I've only just now checked the blog (11pm Thursday) and am really touched, comforted and inspired by your words.
[BTW has anyone ever worked out shte publish times this thing shows???) Anyway back to the point....
I shall draw upon each of your comments when I hammer out the next 10km. I am, of course, choosing to encapulate alll of Phil's advice in one statement - "go shoe shopping"!
And if nothing else works I shall picture Bruce trying to turn on his Garmin and that will make me laugh for at least one km!
Phil - your "Go to the Physio!" command is very pertinent. I did exactly that this morning. I've been experiencing a (new for me) niggling pain in my left quad for a little over a week. It was very sore after the 25km pace race, particlularly during that woeful 14km on Wednesday. It was back worse than ever when I tried to do a 10km today. I perservered for about 1.5kms until I finally admitted I'm too old and wise to continue running hurt. I literally jumped off the treadmill and dashed into the physio office that's in the same centre as my gym. Tim the Phsyio had no patients and saw me straight away. The good news is I'm allowed to keep running! He thinks it's my hip joint rubbing on a nerve in the hip socket - causing a referred pain in my quad. No amount of stretching that muscle was going to fix it - which had been my approach last week.
So it was only 1.5 km today and a forced rest to come tomorrow as the gym creche is closed for repairs and my husband is in Melbourne. But come Saturday I'm on the road with my list of motivators, including visions of Margaret swimming in her running clothes. In my mind she will be wearing her booooootiful green striders top!
Leonore - I do look forward to your list of motivators. Sounds like it will have to go on the fridge.

Fab friends
HELP! I had the worst treadmill run (14km) of my life today - and it was my first run since our Sunday race!
Suggestions to stop the "why the heck am I doing this" mindset that is currently prevailing are most welcome.

Sunday 17 Feb Run
Hey!
Still here and awake after our HUGE effort this morning. May now stagger to the tely to watch McDreamy on Gray's before hitting that pillow. I'm also still very chuffed with myself and my time this morning. And I so loved all the support from my fellow Striders - THANK YOU because it really helped. A special thanks to Bruce for his hugely needed tough love in my last 2 kms. I also still smile when I think about us all whooping and high-fiveing each other! I'm sure the rest of the runners hate "those striders" who lob up en mass and take over.
Denise - you WERE missed this morning. How did you go at the STaR? Did you do the 30k? Did you find someone nice to run with? How are those sick kiddies?
Now...... There was a little "grumbling" this morning about the prospect of running in the bush for 14km this coming Sunday. And I hasten to add it wasn't just me who was whinging about that! There came some chat about staging our own rebel run of about 20km with the start/finish somewhere in the city because that is central for all and it means Bruce (aka Fab Friend)can just walk to it. We also wanted free parking for the rest of us carbon emitting automobile users. So.... we thought starting around the Hickson Road/Dawes Point area would be good. I've since thought that we could do the SMH Sydney 1/2 course - the two lap one through the city. I'm also happy to just start there at Hickson Road and run wherever our legs and garmin GPS watches take us.
Anyone interested?

Hosting A Run
I have been in touch with Ross McCarthy who organises the calender with our offer of being novice organisers of a run to say thanks to Striders for their support (Phil you get the first piece of cake and no work).
Ross has suggested June 1 as the date we host. We would need to collect the gear from the Cherrybrook Canter the Sunday before. We can suggest the run location (being mindful of the recent locations).
Does June 1 suit enough people and any suggestions about the run location? The sTar maps will give you a guide. See you on Sunday for the race (first one to each 2.5km stop gets the colour choice of the jelly beans....)

OUCH OUCH OUCH
30.0km - We did it! And we even got the shot of Phil and all five us.
Phil - hope you don't mind but I've decided we're "Phil's Fab Five". That alliteration couldn't be missed - we are Striders after all!
Bruce - I hasten to add that, given your honour "fab friend" status, we shall ponder (while clocking those many training miles) an appropriate "F" name for you in our little group.
I'm off to collapse on the sofa (minus the wine glass this week)
Happy running!
Paula

I'm off to collapse on the sofa (minus the wine glass this week)
Happy running!

Ouch again..
26.2 kms - we are good!
Big thanks to Paula, Margaret and Bruce for chatting to me ..kept my mind occupied while my legs were saying we haven't done this for a while! It was lovely to run in our wonderful city - what a great way of seeing new views.
I mentioned last year that I think it would be great if we offer to host one of the sTar runs (post Marathon). I imagine the calender will be put together soon. I was thinking May (not Mothers Day...) let me know what you all think and happy running this week.

OUCH

Here's a pic from the 25km we did at Hornsby on Sunday 27 January.
Wow was that hard work for me. Thank goodness we got lost around the 14km mark and and had to make up the rest of the run on the road. This was my longest run EVER and boy are the quads complaining about it today.
Another 10km tomorrow and then 14km on Wednesday. uuuuuugggggghhhhhhhhh!! Oh well... that will give me plenty of time on the treadmill to do the mental calculations of how many calories I've burnt and so how many TNCC snakes I can eat!

This Sunday
Hi girls
I was wanting to know if any of you will be doing the Striders run this Sunday am. I think it's meant to be a flat one...at last. I missed last week as I've had one of the kids very restless at night with an allergy to something. Did manage a 20k locally later in the day though. Hope everyone is going well.

Hi All,
It's Sharyn. Looking forward to seeing everyone on Sunday at Dee Why. I've pleasingly been able to stick to the program over the holiday period. I ran with Phil at Centennial Park and than last weekend did 22km from Glwondalon (Lake Macquarie) to Swansea. Ended with a nice dip in the ocean at Caves Beach. Looking forward to getting back into home routine but enjoyed inventing new runs on hols for the last 3 weeks.

I'm posting this snap for Denise. (uploading a pic to the blog site from a blackberry would cost way too many Euros for the poor thing).
How cool is this snap? I really love that she is sporting the club colours!
Denise I'm sure will happily oblige us all with all the wonderful details during her first STaR back.
I personally will see any available MTGers at Harbourside Hike.

Back (again)
Hi girls. How did the training go over Xmas. Denise, I apologise for not showing up to the last run before the break (long story - worth telling over a 25km run!).
I am back on the road and will be there Sunday morning for a run around Centennial Park. Hope to see you all there and that you all had a great Chrissie break.
